Calathea zebrina (Sims) Lindl is also called Stromanthe sanguinea. It is a perennial medium-sized herbaceous plant of the Marantaceae family and the Calathea genus. The plant can reach up to 1 meter in height. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate, unequal on both sides. The leaf surface is dark green with yellow-green stripes and is velvet-like. The back of the leaves is light gray-green when young and light purplish-red when old. The inflorescence is a head-like one. The corolla is violet or white. The ovary is glabrous. It blooms from May to June.
Growth environment
It prefers a semi-shady and high-temperature and humid environment. From April to September is the growth period. The suitable growth temperature is 15°C to 30°C. The overwintering temperature is 10°C to 15°C. In the hot summer months, it is afraid of direct sunlight. Usually, it should have sufficient and soft light. The air should be fresh and humid. It should not be too shaded. A loose, fertile, and well-permeable cultivation substrate is required.
