Titanota Agave Plant Features
The Titanota Agave is a short-growing plant that forms an interesting symmetrical rosette with well-defined leaves, reaching one to two feet tall and two feet wide. It is typically stemless and has a solitary growth habit. The Titanota Agave has small, attractive silvery-blue leaves with reddish spines along the edges and a terminal spine. The species shows variations in leaf shape, size, and color. After about ten years, in the fall or winter months, it produces a ten- to fifteen-foot-tall flower spike with a panicle of light green flowers tinged with red bracts.
This agave is ideal for use in containers, rock gardens, low planters, and raised beds. It looks especially attractive when planted in groupings with other agave species and in succulent gardens. Historically, the plant was used by the Nahuatl-speaking tribes in central Mexico to make an alcoholic beverage. It is native to the semiarid Mexican states of Puebla and Oaxaca, where it grows at elevations from 4,500 to 7,500 feet.
Titanota Agave Growing Instructions
The Titanota Agave thrives in full sun, hot conditions, reflected heat, and well-draining soil. Although it is drought-resistant, supplemental irrigation is beneficial during hot, dry summers. The plant is hardy to about 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit and needs some protection from frost.
