Gymnocalycium spegazzinii v.unguispinum

Gymnocalycium spegazzinii var. unguispinum, commonly known as Cat Claw Chin Cactus, is a charming dwarf cactus belonging to the Cactaceae family. The varietal epithet "unguispinum" means "with claw-like spines," perfectly describing its distinctive spination.
This cactus features a globose, gray-green to brownish stem, typically with 10 broad ribs. The apex is woolly and slightly depressed. It can reach a height of up to 12 cm (4.8 in) and a diameter of 20 cm (8 in). A key characteristic is its short, stout spines, usually less than 1 cm (0.4 in) long, which curve downward and press closely against the stem, resembling tiny cat claws. Each areole bears 5–9 radial spines; central spines are absent.
Funnel-shaped flowers emerge from the apical areoles in late spring, lasting about two weeks. The blooms are up to 7 cm (2.8 in) long, typically white or pink with a greenish midrib, and have a deep red base. The filaments are deep red or purple, with pale yellow anthers. The fruit is green, up to 3.5 cm long, and covered with a bluish bloom.
Native to Argentina, this variety is highly prized by cactus enthusiasts for its unique, compact form and attractive spination. It is a relatively easy-to-grow species, thriving in well-draining soil and bright, indirect light.
