Cotyledon tomentosa 'Bear's Paw' is a perennial succulent plant in the Crassulaceae family. This plant is highly branched, with green stems and fleshy, ovoid leaves covered in dense, short white hairs. The leaves have red, claw-like teeth at the tips, and it produces dichotomous cymes with yellow florets from July to September.
Native to the Cape Province of South Africa, this species thrives in a warm, dry, sunny, and well-ventilated environment. It becomes dormant if exposed to excessively high temperatures in summer. Avoid cold and excessive humidity. Propagation can be done through cuttings. This species is appreciated for its unique leaf shape and color, its delicate small flowers, and its leaves that resemble bear's paws, making it a charming and ornamental plant.
The leaves of the 'Bear's Paw' are fleshy, spatulate, and densely covered with white tomentum. The edges of the leaves have brown teeth, giving them the appearance of small bear's paws, which is both unique and cute. It makes an elegant, attractive indoor potted plant.
Care Tips
Light: Prefers bright light and grows best in a well-lit environment. It can tolerate some shade but will flourish with more sunlight. Prolonged periods in the shade may cause the plant to stretch and reduce its ornamental value.
Water: Like most succulents, it is drought-tolerant and does not like waterlogging. Water using the dry-and-wet method; only water when the soil is dry. During the growing season, water once a week, but reduce watering in other periods to avoid root damage from overwatering.
Soil: Requires loose, well-draining soil. Change the soil every one to two years to prevent it from becoming compacted. You can use a pre-made succulent soil mix or prepare your own nutrient-rich soil.
Potting: Ceramic pots are recommended as they offer good permeability. Clay pots dry out too quickly, while plastic pots retain too much moisture and have poor drainage.
Temperature: Prefers a warm environment. In summer, ensure proper ventilation and protect from strong light, aiming for temperatures around 86°F (30°C) or lower. In winter, move the plant to a warm room and maintain a temperature of about 50°F (10°C), not dropping below 41°F (5°C).
Humidity: Grows well in average household humidity levels. Avoid high humidity as it does not benefit the plant.
