Description:
E. 'Romeo Rubin' is a dwarf succulent belonging to the Crassulaceae family. The plant forms a sessile rosette of leaves arranged in spirals and can reach 12 cm in height and 20 cm in diameter. The leaves are fleshy, oblong-ovate, and slightly pointed at the apex, with colors ranging from burgundy red to wine red; new leaves at the center may be green. The coloration is influenced by high light levels and cold but dry temperatures. The leaves at the apex are more erect and closely spaced, while those at the bottom are more horizontal and open. Blooming occurs in spring, producing small red flowers with yellow tips on long stalks. This hybrid is highly valued by collectors for its unique color, which resembles that of a Martian plant.
Cultivation:
E. 'Romeo Rubin' is a rare hybrid that is easy to cultivate. It prefers full sunlight and does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C, so it should be kept indoors. The soil should be a mix of pumice, clay, and loam to ensure good drainage and prevent root rot, to which the plant is prone. Use a pot with drainage holes to manage excess water. Water regularly from March to November, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to allow the plant to enter dormancy. For faster, lusher growth, fertilize monthly during the growing season with cactus-specific fertilizers and stop fertilizing in winter. Repot the plant in a pot 2 cm wider if it becomes root-bound, using fresh potting soil. Repot in early spring and remove dead leaves from the base to prevent increased humidity, which can attract parasites like mealybugs.
Propagation:
Echeverias are among the easiest succulents to propagate. As Echeveria 'Romeo Rubin' is a hybrid, to retain its characteristics, propagation should be done by cutting. Use leaf cuttings in spring. Cut the leaves as close to the stem as possible, allow them to dry for a few days until the cut surface forms a callus, then place the cuttings in a mixture of sand, soil, and pumice. For best results, cut two or more leaves at once. Maintain a temperature around 20°C for successful propagation.
